Professor Andrew Carr
Department:
Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedics; Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences
College office:
Professorial Fellow
Research interests:

Professor Carr's research interests are primarily focused on developing and evaluating surgical technologies including joint replacement, arthroscopy, minimally invasive surgery and tissue engineering. His research group investigates cellular and molecular mechanisms of soft tissue ageing and failure. He has developed novel woven and electrospun tissue engineering scaffolds for soft tissue repair which are now entering clinical trials.

With colleagues in Oxford he pioneered the involvement of patients in assessing the outcome of orthopaedic operations and has invented a series of patient reported outcome measures (PROMS). The Oxford Scores are now used worldwide in clinical trials and by national joint replacement registries. He is chief investigator on national multi-centre randomised trials of shoulder surgery (UKUFF and CSAW trials) and early phase experimental trials of growth factors (PAROT trial) as well as new ideas coming out of the NDORMS laboratories, such as the Oxford Biopatch.
