Worcester Energy Day returns with interdisciplinary conference
After a successful inaugural edition in 2024, Worcester Energy Day returned on 28 February 2025 in the Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre. Dr Krishanu Dey summarises what happened:
Designed to bring together students and researchers around the topics of clean energy generation and storage, the event was convened by Dr Krishanu Dey, Junior Research Fellow in Sciences at Worcester. With more than 90 registrations, this turned out to be a huge success with truly pan-university representation from University departments across STEM (Physics, Chemistry, Materials, Engineering, Statistics, Earth Sciences) and beyond (Geography, Philosophy, Law, International Development, Saïd Business School, Blavatnik School of Government, Economics, History, Public Policy, Politics, and International Relations). Notably, the multidisciplinary Oxford ZERO Institute (Zero-carbon Energy Research Oxford) partnered with Worcester for this event and helped to attract a broad base of interest from the energy research community at Oxford.
Dr Lisa Wedding, Sustainability Fellow, kickstarted the event with her welcome address, while closing remarks were delivered by Professor John Parrington, Joint Head of Research. We also had three keynote speakers from within the Oxford faculty, who described their research on silicon photovoltaics, organic photovoltaics and the future of cooling. In addition, there were ten oral presentations and six three-minute flash talks, offering graduate students and postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present their research. Moreover, we provided ample opportunities for participants to make new connections and build collaborations
Worcester Energy Day continues to provide a unique platform for Oxford researchers to showcase their energy-related research among peers. The event also highlighted the leading role which Worcester plays in promoting sustainability activities within the University, providing a template for other colleges and departments to organise similar interdisciplinary gatherings.
