Worcester women help Oxford to varsity rugby success

The annual Varsity Matches between Oxford and Cambridge’s rugby clubs took place on 8th March at the StoneX Stadium, the north London home of Saracens Rugby Club.

The Varsity Matches are the historic annual rugby clash between Oxford University Rugby Football Club (OURFC) and Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC). The first men’s match was played in 1872 and the first women’s match was played in 1988, making Varsity one of the world’s longest running sporting fixtures. Worcester fielded four players for this year’s matches:

  • Amelie Harris-Lovett (2021, Biochemistry)
  • Estelle Onwuka (2023, English)
  • Will Roddy (2023, English)
  • Marged Williams (2022, English)

Oxford’s Women’s Blues dominated a sun-drenched pitch to beat Cambridge 27-7. Amelie, Estelle and Marged all got to see action on the field and the Dark Blues scored five tries to ensure they would take the trophy home for the 24th time. The Men’s match was a closer battle, with Cambridge managing to take home a 35-28 victory. However, Worcester’s Will Roddy put up a great fight for the team, scoring 2 out of Oxford’s 4 tries. Way to go Will and Team Worcester!
