Andrew Carr recieves MBE for services to Orthopaedic Research & Training

Congratulations to Professorial Fellow Andrew Carr, who has been awarded an MBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List for services to Orthopaedic Research and Training.

Currently Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedics, Professor Carr’s distinguished career has combined clinical practice, teaching, research and leadership roles. His research has significantly influenced the management of surgical patients – including pioneering the development and evaluation of surgical implants and technologies like the Oxford partial knee replacement that has been implanted in over 2 million patients worldwide. He has also worked on improving the infrastructure for surgical trials and led the use of placebo surgery controls, decommissioning ineffective operations.

Professor Carr has been a strong promoter of interdisciplinary research, founding the Botnar Institute for Musculoskeletal Sciences and directing a NIHR Biomedical Research unit. He trained in Bristol, Sheffield, Oxford, Seattle and Melbourne, established the shoulder surgery service in Oxford, and is past President of the British Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society (BESS). He has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of his contributions, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

It was a huge surprise to receive this award. It recognises the work of many colleagues, collaborators and students who have been very supportive throughout my career. I am enormously appreciative to them all. I am especially pleased that orthopaedic research has been recognised and am grateful to the commitment and support of patients and funders.
