Worcester College, Oxford is delighted to report one of the largest single donations to its Tercentenary Campaign to endow the College for the next three hundred years, to sustain the unique Oxford tutorial system and enhance the College’s celebrated historic buildings, gardens and grounds.
The establishment of a world-leading Centre for Southeast Asia Studies at the University of Oxford moved closer on 10 October, with His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Shah launching the campaign.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gareth Prior as Worcester's new Finance and Estates Bursar; Gareth will join the College on 24 September.
Gareth is currently Finance Director for WRAP, the UK government’s sustainability charity. Previously he spent 17 years in academic publishing, most recently as Vice President of Strategy & Operations for the US publisher John Wiley & Sons. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Thanks to new funding from the Tinsley Foundation, Worcester can build on its programme to engage with students from under-represented backgrounds. The College has created a new role of the Tinsley Outreach Fellow and is now advertising for the combined outreach and research post. It offers candidates the opportunity to lead or support the College’s outreach and access activities for half of their time, with the other 50 per cent set aside for carrying out research in their chosen field.
The Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre at Worcester College, Oxford, is on the shortlist for this year’s Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Stirling Prize, the UK’s top accolade for architecture. It is one of six 2018 RIBA National Award winners to have made the final shortlist.
The University’s flagship access programme, UNIQ, takes place this month, with Worcester being one of the Oxford colleges hosting students from UK state schools and colleges. Throughout July, four cohorts of around 180 students in total will be sampling Worcester’s college life during their weeklong, residential summer courses.
As a girl growing up in Afghanistan, Sitarah Mohammadi was told that women and girls did not need education. However, as a Hazara refugee she escaped to Australia where she was able to complete her schooling and went on to study for an undergraduate degree in international relations and human rights at Monash University. After overcoming all these obstacles, Sitarah has been named as one of three academically outstanding students from Australia and New Zealand who have been awarded the Provost’s Scholarship in 2019.
Worcester’s incoming JCR president Ephraim Conteh and other students who have completed their first year have urged prospective students to come to the University of Oxford’s Open Days, which will take place on Wednesday 27 June, Thursday 28 June and Friday 14 September.
Ephraim, originally from London, said: ‘See what life is like and get a glimpse of what the future could hold for you.’
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced that the Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre at Worcester College is one of the 49 winners of the prestigious 2018 RIBA National Awards for architecture.
The judges’ report said: ’The setting for this building is unbeatable. It is beside a perfectly mown cricket pitch within the secluded, rambling and idyllic garden of one of Oxford’s most historic colleges. And there’s a lake nearby too.
