Claire Robins

Worcester Old Member Claire Robins, who came to the College to study Classics in 1985, has been awarded an OBE in the latest Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

She is being recognised for her services to Education, one of around 1,000 extraordinary people across the United Kingdom listed for their achievements.

Ms Robins is Headteacher of Sir John Lawes School, a secondary school in St Albans, Hertfordshire; and CEO of Scholars’ Education Trust, and a Member of the North-West London South-Central Headteacher Board.

Current student Ephraim Conteh (2017) - who has been elected JCR president for the next academic year - has successfully nominated one of his former school teachers, Jonathan Taylor, for an Oxford University awards scheme designed to recognise excellent teachers from state schools and colleges. The Inspirational Teachers scheme is designed to acknowledge the crucial role teachers play in encouraging talented students in their schools or colleges to apply to Oxford. The ten winning teachers were honoured at an event at St Peter's College on 18th May.

Captain of the University Blues Equestrian team Tora Fleming (2016, Chemistry), and Madeleine Dale (2017, Medicine), are heading Stateside with the Oxford University Equestrian Club to compete against some of the best riders America has to offer.

Taking place over two and a half weeks in September, ten members of the Club will tour Universities on the East Coast – including Yale, Cornell and Dartmouth – competing in dressage and jumping in a points based league to decide an overall winner, the US or Oxford.

Actor and writer David Wood OBE (1963) will shortly be publishing his new book, Filming IF..., the first written memoir about the film IF... David co-starred alongside Malcolm McDowell and Richard Warwick in the cult classic directed by Lindsay Anderson, and the film celebrates its 50th anniversary in Spring 2018. The book contains David's memories, from the personalities involved, the day-to-day challenges, and the reception given to the film, including winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Worcester College Oxford did not respond to the employer consultation on the future of the USS pension scheme, since nearly all the trustees of the College are members of the scheme and thus have a conflict of interest. At a meeting of the Governing Body on 7 March 2018 it was resolved that "Worcester College wishes to express its commitment to safeguarding the future of higher education in the UK and has particular concern over the recruitment and retention of young academics of the highest calibre.

8th February 2018

The Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Honorary Fellow and Old Member of Worcester (1998, Theology) was installed as the Bishop of Ripon on Sunday 4th February. The service was lead by the Bishop of Leeds, the Archbishop of York, and the Dean of Ripon, and was attended by hundreds of people. Helen-Ann was previously the Bishop of Waikato in New Zealand, and is the first woman who has trained and served as a priest in the Church of England to become a bishop.

Thomas Whitehead (1997 Law BCL) sadly died on 19th January after a long illness, aged just 39. He leaves behind his wife Miranda and two young daughters.

Tom's funeral will be held in London on Friday 9th February - please email if you would like further details, and we will forward your message on to his family.

An Epiphany Festival at Worcester will be held from 18th–21st January 2018, beginning with a special carol service, concluding with a service of Venetian Vespers, and including an early music performance combined with a craft beer tasting. We are saddened to announce the death of Old Member Godfrey Smith (1944, PPE), who passed away on 22nd December 2017, aged 91. The former Editor of The Sunday Times Magazine, Godfrey also worked on the Daily Express during his long career in journalism. He was a published author, writing both fiction and non-fiction, and was a contributor to the College Magazine and Record.
