Worcester College Oxford did not respond to the employer consultation on the future of the USS pension scheme, since nearly all the trustees of the College are members of the scheme and thus have a conflict of interest. At a meeting of the Governing Body on 7 March 2018 it was resolved that "Worcester College wishes to express its commitment to safeguarding the future of higher education in the UK and has particular concern over the recruitment and retention of young academics of the highest calibre.

8th February 2018

The Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, Honorary Fellow and Old Member of Worcester (1998, Theology) was installed as the Bishop of Ripon on Sunday 4th February. The service was lead by the Bishop of Leeds, the Archbishop of York, and the Dean of Ripon, and was attended by hundreds of people. Helen-Ann was previously the Bishop of Waikato in New Zealand, and is the first woman who has trained and served as a priest in the Church of England to become a bishop.

Thomas Whitehead (1997 Law BCL) sadly died on 19th January after a long illness, aged just 39. He leaves behind his wife Miranda and two young daughters.

Tom's funeral will be held in London on Friday 9th February - please email if you would like further details, and we will forward your message on to his family.

An Epiphany Festival at Worcester will be held from 18th–21st January 2018, beginning with a special carol service, concluding with a service of Venetian Vespers, and including an early music performance combined with a craft beer tasting. We are saddened to announce the death of Old Member Godfrey Smith (1944, PPE), who passed away on 22nd December 2017, aged 91. The former Editor of The Sunday Times Magazine, Godfrey also worked on the Daily Express during his long career in journalism. He was a published author, writing both fiction and non-fiction, and was a contributor to the College Magazine and Record.

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra will give a world premiere of movement 1 of "POLIN", the second symphony of current student Sturdivant Adams (2016), on November 2, 2017 in the Sheldonian Theatre. The piece won the orchestra’s 2017 Composers’ Competition. There will also be music by Professor Robert Saxton, Professor of Composition and Tutor in Music at Worcester.

We are delighed to announce that on Wednesday 18th October HRH The Duchess of Cornwall joined HRH Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak to officially open the Sultan Nazrin Shah Centre. The opening ceremony included musical and theatrical performances by Worcester students in the Tuanku Bainun auditorium, a speech by the Sultan and the unveiling of the dedication plaque by The Duchess. As part of the Royal Society of Biology's Biology Week, Dr John Parrington, Associate Professor and Tutor in Medicine, is speaking at The Royal Institution of Great Britain in a debate on genome editing. The debate, entitled "Genome editing: Where do we draw the line?" will take place on Monday 9 October and begins at 7 p.m. The panel includes Dr Robin Lovell-Badge FRSB, Dr Ann Bruce, Peter Thompson and Professor Shirley Hodgson FRSB alongside John.

The 2016/17 Norrington Table has been released and we are delighted to announce that Worcester has placed fourth, improving on a ranking of ninth last year. The Norrington Table ranks the performance of students at each college in finals, and is based on the classifications of undergraduate degrees awarded.
