List of James Campbell’s antiquarian books at Worcester

This is not a full new blog post but an addendum to January’s post about one of James Campbell’s early-printed books. If some readers were curious what else came to the Library from that former fellow – and Fellow Librarian – the list below should satisfy that curiosity. As with most of the Library’s pre-1801 books published in the British Isles, their vernacular languages, and the wider “British” world, these have been added to the English Short Title Catalogue. Should you want to find what other eligible titles we hold, select the Library Code “bOwo” as one of your Advanced Search options. At the moment only a small proportion of our early-printed books have been catalogued onto SOLO, but in those instances where an ESTC record is lacking, links below have been given to full SOLO records if you want more bibliographical information than the brief summary given.

A couple of the works are worth quickly flagging. No. 12 is an edition of Pope Gregory IX’s Decretals that does not otherwise appear to be held in Oxford. No. 6 seems to be a very early printing of Bentham’s History and antiquities of the church of Ely apparently not otherwise found in the ESTC. Other titles attest to Campbell’s love of East Anglia and his interest in the herring fisheries.

“Bookending” the list of Campbell’s donations are two of his bookplates.
