The College is deeply saddened to learn of the death of its Honorary Fellow, The Rt Hon The Lord Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood (1937-2023).

Simon Brown came up to Worcester to read history before switching to law. He was called to the Bar in 1961 and became a High Court Judge in 1984. Having been appointed a Law Lord, he became one of the inaugural Justices of the Supreme Court when that body was founded in 2009. He was inducted as an Honorary Fellow at Worcester in 1993. Following his retirement from the Supreme Court, Lord Brown was a very active member of the House of Lords, stepping back on 19 June this year.

Provost David Isaac, a solicitor and Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission before taking up his post, said:

“Lord Brown was a giant of the legal world and we at Worcester are proud of his many achievements. We are grateful for his wise counsel and commitment to the College over many years. It was a privilege to know him – his insatiable humour and friendship will be remembered fondly by many members of Worcester. My thoughts, and those of the whole College community, are with Simon’s wife Jennifer and their family.”

Lord Brown is survived by Jennifer and their children Ben (1988, Law), Abigail and Daniel. This week, the College flag will fly at half-mast in his honour. Lord Brown’s obituary may be read in The Times.
