The Rt Hon. Sir Anthony May (1940-2024)
The College is deeply saddened to learn of the death of its Honorary Fellow, the Right Honorable Sir Anthony May.
Sir Anthony was educated at Bradfield College and came up to Worcester in 1960 to read Literae Humaniores as a Trevelyan Scholar. He was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1967 and joined Keating Chambers in 1969. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1979 and built a distinguished practice in the field of construction contracts. With Donald Keating, Anthony took on the momentous task of writing the fifth edition of what is now Keating on Construction Contracts, to be followed by the sixth edition in 1995 while on the bench.
He was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division in 1991, followed by the Court of Appeal in 1997. He took on many other appointments including President of the Queen’s Bench Division, President of the Society of Construction Law and in 2008 became Treasurer of Inner Temple, where he hosted a visit by HM The Queen.
Anthony retired from the bench in 2011 and took on the role of Commissioner for Interception of Communications. Sadly, in June 2014, he was seriously injured in a road accident and after extensive treatment, retired from public life. He is survived by his wife Stella and by a son and two daughters, to all of whom we extend our condolences.
