Worcester College will be welcoming Hans Hanley as the newest recipient of the Daniel M Sachs Scholar in October 2018. The award is one of the most prestigious on offer, giving graduates full funding to cover both fees and living costs.

The 22-year-old graduate from Princeton University, USA, will be taking an MSc in Computer Science at Oxford. Hans, from Florida, majored in electrical engineering with certificates in applications of computing and in robotics and intelligent systems. His interests are in cybersecurity and personal privacy in the digital age.

He said: ‘I am so deeply grateful for the opportunity afforded to me by the Daniel M Sachs Scholarship at Worcester College. The Sachs scholarship has changed my life. It has given me the chance to study computer science and math at Oxford that I would not have had otherwise. I specifically plan to use the scholarship to better understand how technology can be used in the public interest in areas from privacy and security to machine learning.

‘I am super excited to come to Oxford and be part of its community. I look forward to being immersed in a place filled to the brim with some of the brightest professors and classmates in the world!’

The Daniel M Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Scholarship commemorates Dan Sachs, a distinguished student and a fine athlete who intended to enter politics. At Worcester College, he read history and shone in rugby, taking home a Blue in 1962.  He died of cancer at the age of 28. Sach’s friends and classmates instituted the scholarship to provide an opportunity to study, work, or travel abroad after graduation.

The Sachs programme now offers a third scholarship: the Daniel M Sachs Scholarship at Princeton for graduates of Worcester College. The most recent scholarship allows students from Worcester the opportunity to enlarge their experience of the world by spending one year as a Visiting Student in the Graduate School at Princeton University. The first Sachs Scholar at Princeton from Worcester College was selected in the autumn of 2016 for matriculation in 2017.

The scholarship is intended for those pursuing a career in public affairs, whether politics, civil service, international affairs, journalism, and public education; or law, science, or medicine in the public interest.
