Classics prizes awarded at Encaenia

At yesterday’s Encaenia ceremony, Worcester third-year Nicholas Romanos was the recipient of two awards for distinguished performance.

Nicholas (2021, Classics & Sanskrit) was recognised for the best overall performance in Classics Mods and also won the De Paravincini Prize for performance in Latin language papers. Alongside his studies, he serves as President of the Oxford Ancient Languages Society.

Encaenia is held annually and is the ceremony at which honorary degrees are conferred by the University to distinguished individuals, and its benefactors are commemorated. This year’s honorands were:

  • Sir Michael Palin, actor, comedian, writer, and television presenter
  • Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and first African to become Director General of the World Trade Organization
  • Sir Demis Hassabis, computer scientist, artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur
  • Professor Salim Yusuf, an internationally renowned cardiologist and epidemiologist
  • Anoushka Shankar, musician, sitarist, composer and producer
  • Warren East, engineer and businessperson who was CEO for Rolls-Royce Holdings
