Successful EDI Fund applications announced

Congratulations to the students and staff who have made successful applications to Worcester’s EDI Fund this year.

Launched in 2023, the EDI Fund is designed to support projects which enhance equality, diversity and inclusion in College life. Four projects were successful in this funding round – read more about them below.

LGBT+ History Month Film Screening

Taking place at the end of LGBT+ History Month, this special film night will bring together a selection of shorts from BFI Flare 2023: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival. The films showcase stories of motherhood, genderqueer identity and LGBT+ refugees and include Oisín (Dir: Alba Fernandez), Mooncake (Dir: Rraine Hanson), and I Was Never Really Here (Dir: Gabriel Bihina Arrahnio). All University members are welcome at the screening on Tuesday 27 February 2024 at 8pm – reserve your place here.

Tango Dance Workshops

Following a popular event in 2021 (pictured here), the EDI Fund is supporting a return of tango dance workshops, masterminded by Housekeeping Supervisor Sam Molina. The event, bringing together staff and students, will celebrate the music and culture of South America – watch this space!

Visual Arts Worcester launch event

To launch the new visual arts society at Worcester (Visual Arts Worcester or VAW) the society will be arranging a half-day conference celebrating and fostering equality, diversity, and inclusion in the visual arts. As EDI is a core principle of the society, the event will bring together diverse creatives from a range of careers with students and communities, to facilitate vibrant discussion and develop pathways into arts and culture. VAW will highlight the college as a dynamic contributor to Oxford’s cultural scene, acting as a connector of the current visual arts resources available at the college and a diverse network for students interested in the arts.

Painting: speaking through art

This initiative aims to represent not only the diversity we have here at Worcester College, but also the warmth of our community. The inspiration for this initiative stemmed from Conversation Piece: Worcester College, Oxford by Edward Halliday, which depicts a group of men gathered around the cloister. With the help of the EDI fund, it will be amazing to have an updated version created, which truly encapsulates the wide array of students that we have today, compared to in 1937.
