Join us for an evening celebrating the remarkable life and legacy of Lord Asa Briggs, one of Britain’s most distinguished historians and former Provost of Worcester College from 1976 to 1991.
Asa Briggs began and completed his academic career at Worcester. In 1945, fresh from Bletchley Park, he arrived to take up a newly-created post as Fellow and Lecturer in Economics and Political Science. When he arrived, he was the youngest Fellow, and there were only ten others. He stayed for ten years, before being lured away to Leeds to become a Professor of History and joint head of department at the age of 34. In 1961 he left Leeds for the new University of Sussex, where in due course he became Vice-Chancellor. In 1976, Briggs, by now Lord Briggs of Lewes, returned to Worcester College as Provost, staying until his retirement in 1991. His years as Provost saw the expansion of the college, the admission of women, and the construction of several of the college’s buildings.
The event will include a welcome from the Provost, talk by the author, a drinks reception and the opportunity to purchase copies of the book.
Please book by 10 October 2025 by completing the form below.
