History of WCBC
Foundation of Worcester College Boat Club
The first Worcester person raced in an Exeter boat and a Worcester crew finished third in the division of the first bumps racing.
Club colours
Black and pink were fixed as official club colours, with the flag as a pink Maltese cross. These colours replaced brown, which had generally been seen to have dampened College moral.
Making history
WCBC was the first club to adopt sliding seats in their boats and proceeded to gain the first non-crash over-bump in bumps history.

Head of the River
1st Men’s Torpid was Head of the River (also in 1838 and 1930) and their Summer Eights crew won the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.
A new crew
Worcester first enters a women’s crew and the novice boat wins Christ Church Regatta, setting the tone for great women’s rowing at Worcester.
On top form
Men’s 1st Eight reaches their highest position of 6th on the river in Summer Eights, only a few years after the women’s 1st Eight was 7th on the river (1984).
Looking to the future
Worcester wins three sets of blades and gains 29 places over Torpids and Eights. The Martlets Society is relaunched as a community for WCBC alumni.
