Music Development Scholarships
Worcester College awards two Music Development Scholarships per year to undergraduate students of any subject who demonstrate outstanding musical abilities.
The scholarship is designed to support musicians of all genres, styles, and instruments, providing them with opportunities to enhance and perfect their skills in a supportive environment that encourages excellence. Recipients are expected to actively contribute to the musical activities of the College, which may involve performing and organising concerts, gigs, recitals, masterclasses, or talks, among other activities and interests.
Examples of development scholarships awarded include:
- A Maths student and avid drummer who regularly performs at gigs and seeks lessons. They also organise gigs at the College bar and perform with their band.
- A Medicine student and a grade 8 oboist who would like to continue lessons and work towards her diploma. She performs with university orchestras and gives a recital as part of the student-run College Music Society.
- A Music student, a Grade 8 harpist and an enthusiastic concert promoter who seeks mentorship in concert promotion and aims to become the president of the College Music Society.
- A Theology student and self-taught DJ who desires formal training and mentoring in London. They also organise and DJ at College garden parties and other events.
- A Music student wishing to improve their conducting, teaching, and outreach skills. They assist with the Jericho Youth Choir and the All Sorts community choir.
Instrumental Scholars receive up to £200 in financial awards, with additional discretionary funds available for music-related expenses such as concerts, music purchases, instrument hire, and courses. Opportunities for masterclasses and mentoring are also provided.
