Student Activities

Middle Common Room (MCR)

The Worcester MCR is both a building and a community. Run by an elected committee, its base is a restored nineteenth-century building situated within the grounds of the College. The building has a computing/study room, a TV room (with a Sky+HD box), pool and table football, a darts board, and a bar. The community comprises about 200 graduate students of a wide variety of ages, nationalities, and backgrounds.

Academically, the MCR is a meeting ground of dialogue and scholarship. In particular, the Franks Society, which usually meets twice a term, provides an opportunity for MCR members to give talks about their research interests to an audience of graduates and academics.

Socially, the Worcester MCR has become one of the most active in Oxford, offering a full range of activities each term, such as variously themed "bops", guest night dinners in hall, quiz nights, movie nights, Sunday brunches, and whatever else our social secretaries can think of. There is also an annual garden party in the garden of the Provost's Lodgings.

Further information can be found on the MCR website.

Music

The student-run Worcester College Music Society arranges an active calendar of events throughout the academic year, consisting of choral concerts, a regular series of chamber music recitals and a wide range of orchestral concerts. Some of these concerts take place beside the lake in the College grounds. There are facilities for rehearsal and practice, including a grand piano, and there is a good chapel choir.

Drama (Buskins)

Worcester has a lively student dramatic society, called the Buskins, which puts on productions throughout the year. There is always one eagerly awaited garden show in the summer; past productions include Coriolanus, Twelfth Night, Henry V, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Sports

The MCR boasts several graduate sports teams including football, cricket, rugby and rowing, and students can get involved at any level, if they wish. The College has the unique geographical advantage of having its sports pitches within its beautiful grounds, so they are easy to reach for practice sessions, or simply in order to cheer friends along in an afternoon match.

Most sports have two competitions which run simultaneously; a League competition and a knock-out 'Cuppers'. Worcester's teams have recently been successful in Hockey, Football, Tennis, Netball, Cricket, Rounders and Lacrosse.
